Representing one of Australia’s largest resource projects, the Wheatstone project is set to propel the operator into the position of one of the largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) providers in the world. And when it needed a thorough inspection of its miles of offshore and onshore pipelines for gas and condensate gathering, processing and export facilities, Shawcor’s Integrity Management group stepped in with innovative inspection techniques to prevent failure of critical pipeline production components and mitigate operational risk.
The primary inspection methods were automated ultrasonic testing (AUT) and non-destructive testing (NDT) inspection, followed by secondary methods of manual ultrasonic testing (MUT), magnetic particle inspection (MPI) and dye penetrant inspection (DPI). The AUT inspection of the corrosion-resistant alloy (CRA) was an extremely complex undertaking—requiring lengthy preparation and a dedicated crew of 50 people. Using an advanced ultrasonic created specifically for this purpose, Shawcor thoroughly inspected the project’s steel catenary risers (SCR) to ensure they could handle intense fatigue and deliver the high performance necessary. And through an innovative adaptation of ultrasonic testing fundamentals and ultrasonic transducers, we assured overall pipeline integrity by delivering real-time interpretation and immediate feedback for the welding process.
Ultimately, our advanced inspection methods provided outstanding reliability within budget while maintaining strict technical and schedule certainty.
