9:40 am Aging tests as per ISO 12736: What should be expected?
- Ms. Eileen Wan, Technology Group Leader – Polymer Compounds Group
- Mr. Pablo Wiesemann, Technical Solutions Manager
The ISO 12736:2014 standard references evaluation of wet heat ageing behavior and water absorption kinetics for subsea wet thermal insulation materials over a 12-month period of exposure to high temperature and high pressure in water. This is a severe exposure regime which few materials have been evaluated against for such a long period.
The experience and results which have been acquired in performing this long-term qualification testing against both historical as well as new materials shall be presented. We also cover challenges faced during execution; test results and analysis; and general takeaways from the qualification program.
11:10 am Impact of exposed field joints on the integrity of offshore pipelines
- Dr. Somaieh Salehpour, General Manager, Canusa-CPS, Canada
Offshore pipelines are typically coated with anticorrosive factory-applied coatings such as fusion bonded epoxy or a multilayer polyolefin system. The pipelines are then welded together on the offshore lay vessel and another set of anticorrosion coatings are applied on the pipeline on the vessel. Cathodic protection (CP) in the form of sacrificial anodes is also normally installed to help provide corrosion control for offshore pipelines. Recently, economic incentives have been driving oil and gas contractors to look into elimination of offshore pipeline field joint coatings and to leave the welded joints bare and only protected by CP. However, this approach can significantly impact the integrity of the pipelines over the years by substantial damage to mainline anti-corrosion coating, extensive negative impact on the steel pipe structure and therefore pipeline failures with harmful environmental impacts. As the pipelines are usually designed to last from 25 to 40 years, these engineering risks and impacts of bare pipeline welded joint under water have been studied in great details with innovative unconventional methods to prevent any potential environmental disaster and to create scientific solutions to maintain the performance of anti-corrosion coating and the integrity of pipelines.
