HomeNorth America Onshore California Shale

California (Monterey Formation) Shale

The Monterey Formation is an oil-rich formation in California, covering 1,750 square miles and reaches into surrounding basins. It is considered the source of the San Joaquin Basin as well as the Kern River, Elk Hills and Midway-Sunset oil fields. Initial assessments showed the basin’s potential to be one of the most prolific oil producing basins in the United States. However, more recent data suggest there are less unconventional resources in the Monterey’s deep basin but instead rather substantial volumes of additional conventional oil and gas resources.
