Utica Shale

The Utica Shale is an organic-rich shale formation that underlies portions of Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky and other parts of North America. Most of the Utica underlies the Marcellus Shale formation, with depths ranging from 2,000 feet up to 2 miles below sea level. It is a stacked play which includes both the Utica formation and the underlying Point Pleasant formation. U.S. EIA estimates show proven reserves of 6.4 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) in Ohio alone. Although it has not been extensively developed, the Utica Shale is becoming a significant oil, natural gas and NGLs producer.
